Take a Paradiddle sticking R L R R - L R L L (Reverse if left handed) and put the right hand on the hihat. Now it will sound more like a groove. Once you’re comfortable with that add a bass drum to the first right hand. Now we should have the typical feel of bass then snare. The final thing is to accent the second left hand in the pattern to really emphasise that backbeat. Once you feel comfortable with that get creative and move it around. As a jumping off point you could play it between ride and hihat only moving your left hand to play the accented left hand on the snare for your backbeat.
